On Tuesday night, at 9 p.m., I tuned into NBC to watch the first presidential debate. It started with Joe Biden politely greeting Donald Trump, but the mood changed within the first five minutes. It was pretty clear what most of the event was going to look like, and I couldn’t help but be a little bit disappointed in the direction it was going. At times it was sad to watch, but there were also some pretty memorable moments from both President Trump and Vice President Biden. This was a debate unlike any we’ve ever seen before. Here are the top five most important moments from first debate of the 2020 presidential election.

5. “I think the country would be better served if we allowed both people to speak with fewer interruptions. I’m appealing to you, sir, to do that” – Chris Wallace to President Trump

This was quickly followed by Trump pointing fingers at Biden and saying that the former Vice President has been interrupting just as much. That statement led Chris Wallace to say, “Well frankly you’ve been doing more interrupting.” Can’t say he was wrong about that one.

4. “Folks, do you have any idea what this clown is doing?” – Vice President Biden

This statement was prompted after one of the many back and forths between the two candidates, and this particular argument was on the subject of healthcare. While Trump claimed that Biden was agreeing with Bernie Sander’s “manifesto,” Biden stayed on topic by bringing up Trump’s views on healthcare for people who need it.

3. “Every time you see him, he’s got a mask. He could be speaking 200 feet away and he shows up with the biggest mask I’ve ever seen.” – President Trump to Vice President Biden

This was supposed to be a rude remark about Biden, but I didn’t take it that way. Yes, Biden does wear a mask because we’re currently living in a global pandemic and he is an at-risk individual. The point President Trump was trying to make was very unclear, but it was somewhat comical.

2. “Will you shut up, man. This is so unpresidential” – Vice President Biden to President Trump

During yet another yelling match between the two candidates, former Vice President Biden told Trump to shut his mouth. To be fair, it was Biden’s turn to speak and Trump was steamrolling everything that Biden had to say about the topic, which was the new opening in the Supreme Court.

1. “Proud Boys, stand back and stand by” – President Trump when asked if he is willing to condemn white supremacist groups

On a more serious note, Proud Boys is a white supremacist group that famously loves Trump. This statement was a very distressing one for many Americans to hear, because our president is essentially telling a racist hate group to be ready to riot if he loses the election. Chilling.
