We all remember how perfect the ending of To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before was. Now that the release of the sequel is imminent, the question on everyone’s mind is how can there be any new drama in the second? 

Unless you have been living under a rock, you have probably heard that Netflix is finally granting everyone’s wishes of a sequel to 2018’s sensation To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before. The movie is set to drop on Wednesday, February 12th as a prep for the most romantic day of the year…. Valentine’s Day. However, in the trailer for P.S. I Still Love You, Lara Jean’s Valentine’s Day doesn’t appear to be going as well as she thought. 

Now I’m sure you are wondering: “How could this be possible? Everything was so great at the end of the first movie.” And you’re right – the problem with that picture-perfect ending is not what author Jenny Han had written for the first book.

Warning: spoilers for first and second books ahead

At the end of the first movie, we see Peter and Lara Jean kissing on the lacrosse field. However, the ending of the first book is extremely different than how it was portrayed in the movies. The first book ends with Lara Jean getting mad at Peter over him still hanging out with Gen (his ex-girlfriend). When Peter comes to the Christmas party at her house to apologize, Lara Jean is talking with Josh and Peter accuses Lara Jean of breaking up with him to be with Josh, a past crush. Lara Jean gets upset as Josh and Peter stop fighting and she throws them both out of her house. The second book starts with Peter and Lara Jean trying to repair their relationship even though Peter is still friends with Gen. Then walks in John Ambrose, one of the five recipients of Lara Jean’s love letters that were sent in the first movie. This spirals into way more drama than Lara Jean can handle. 

How will this affect the start of the second movie?  

Due to the end of the first movie, it is unclear how the producers are planning on introducing the drama in the second movie. More than likely it will be introduced with Lara Jean running into John Ambrose and one of them bringing up the love letter. How it will continue from there has been left up for interpretation. One thing is for sure – it will be very entertaining. Whether the ending of the first movie will make the second movie better or worse is unclear.
