Advice for freshmen as the school year begins

Every year, as a Lasso tradition, we publish advice for each grade for the start of the new year, put together by writers that just finished that grade. This year, as we enter our first Block One in Schoology conferences rather than in classrooms, forging new, strange traditions, and reimagining old ones, our advice has changed a little.

Don’t be afraid to meet new people.

One of the best things about high school is you are surrounded by so many people! Don’t be afraid to talk to them. It can be intimidating to talk to someone new, in your grade or a different grade level. But breaking the ice and saying hello opens the door to making new connections. You can meet so many cool people by just saying “hello.” And don’t forget about the new students to Falls Church – they will also be needing some new peers to welcome them to the Meridian community!

Take school seriously.

Expectations are going to be different compared to middle school. Be prepared! Slacking off at the start of the school year will not be in your best interest. Start the year with commitment and a good attitude while completing your assignments and doing your best on assessments.

Join sports or clubs.

Joining one of the many clubs or sports teams Meridian offers is one of the best ways to not only meet others but to find new talents and hobbies! Joining a club or team is encouraged and rightfully so. It’s a fun way to develop or discover new or continuing talents. It is also a great way to meet new people who share similar interests, specifically students in other grades you wouldn’t normally meet.

Don’t be afraid to ask for help.

There are so many people all around you that are there to help. If you have a personal or school issue, teachers and counselors are always there to assist. If you don’t feel comfortable talking to a teacher or counselor, ask a peer! There are many false expectations that high school students must work independently. Don’t let that impact your freshman year — reach out.

Find a study strategy that works for you.

New school year, new school, perfect time to figure out what works for you. Finding a routine that works for you is one of the most important things. Finding your pace and schedule will help you stay on top of all your assignments and prepare for the future. You will have greater success with your work when you are confident in organizing your time and completing your work.

In high school every idea connects and can lead to your overall success and enjoyment of school.  Having confidence in yourself and an awareness of the resources all around you will put you on the right track for a successful year! Best of luck to all the new Mustangs.
