Each week, the Lasso Editorial Board will comment on an issue that is relevant to the students at George Mason High School. We strive to present a student-oriented opinion about topics big and small that matter to all of Mustang Nation.
When George Mason High School comes up in conversation, the focus is rarely athletic. George Mason is seen as a small, diverse, highly academic proficient school, as it should be. This year, however, Mason athletes have taken a large step towards gaining the title of an “athletic” school. With seven girls and one boy running at states, a conference banner, two teams with the number one seed in Regionals, it is safe to say that history is being made at George Mason this fall.
This monumental fall season brought the school closer together. We saw extraordinary turnout of students in the fan section and fans storm the field after winning games. We saw overtime wins, we saw double digit triumphs, and comeback thrillers. We heard countless acknowledgements on our morning announcements of the success of our teams and saw of the game highlights from Mr. Byrd’s vines.
How successful were the Mustangs this fall? The field hockey team, finished 15-4 and reached the first round of regionals after going 2-12 only two short years ago. The football team hosted their first home playoff game since 1998 and clinched their spot in the Regional Quarter-Finals. Varsity volleyball will be hanging its first ever banner in the Mason gym as Conference Champions. The girls cross country team qualified for States for the 17th year in a row and all finished within the top 40. The boys cross country team, though only represented by one individual (junior, Ryan Henderson) placed 66 out of 102 runners. Even the golf team sent sophomore George Gilligan to the regional tournament and made Second Team All-District, and Second All-Conference.
“It’s been one of the strongest fall seasons we have had as a whole,” said Assistant Athletic Director, Julie Bravin.
Collectively, Mason sports won more than 75% of their games this fall season.

Let us all begin investing in more red and black face paint now before stores run out, for this only marks the beginning of a new era for George Mason. As “Most Improved” and “MVP” awards are distributed in the Fall Sports Banquet in December, let us also celebrate each individual who made this season such a historic one.
