George Mason’s varsity golf team placed fifth out of seven teams in the conference and ended their season with a 1-5 record after their conference defeat. They finished the tournament with 390 points, 36 points behind Clarke County, the second team qualified for Regionals.
“We had a fun season, but it was not as successful as we wanted. The team had a good mix of new players and veterans who provided great leadership,” said head golf coach, Chris Carico.
Though the team did not make it to the Regional Tournament, sophomore George Gilligan traveled to Williamsburg to play individually in regionals. With a score of 99 points, Gilligan did not come home with a regional trophy, however he came back hopeful and determined for next year.
“I loved it and it makes me feel less nervous for next year to come,” Gilligan said. He plans to work hard during the offseason and to focus on his composure for next fall.
Gilligan also received Second Team All-District and Second Team All-Conference awards this golf season.
The golf team’s most successful game was their victory over Warren County in late August. Only seven holes were played this match however, due to weather conditions.
The top six players ended with an outstanding score, bringing home the only win for George Mason. Senior Devin Thomas topped the chart with a score of 33 points.
- Devin Thomas (Senior)- 33
- George Gilligan (Sophomore) – 36
- Daniel Schlitt (Senior) – 36
- Nick Wells (Freshman) – 37
- Matthew Kim (Sophomore) – 37
- Jack Goggin (Junior) – 40
Despite the team’s defeated season, they look to their season as a memorable bonding experience for the seasons to come.
“This season was really a year of rebuilding and working together as a team. We lost a lot of seniors last year making it necessary for the seniors this year to really step up as role models, senior Daniel Schlitt said.
As the the fall sports banquet soon approaches, the golf program will be commemorating four seniors for their contributions to the team. The golf team is at a heavy loss with more than one third of the team leaving next year; however, the bonds between all players is sure to lead the golf team into next season.
