The George Mason football team has grown in leaps and bounds this season, hosting the first round of the Regional play-offs for the first time since 1998 and winning. The team, led by Coach Green, had an overall record of 8-4, as opposed to last year’s 2-8.
The football team not only played in but won the first Regional Tournament game against Amelia County, with a final score of 42-28. Their season ended on Friday, November 20, against Clarke County in the second round of the Regional Tournament.
The team’s final game on Friday 20, away at Clarke County, ended with a score of 47-0.
The football team has many experienced senior players, including defensive back Matthew Mineo, linebacker Hunter Sulc, and running back D’Montae Noble.
“I think the biggest thing this year is that we’re all playing more as a team. We’re always looking out for each other and we’ve always got each other’s back on the field,” said Mineo.
“The guys have a real bond and I think that’s what brought us to new heights,” said Hunter Sulc. “We made history this year, with the first playoff win in Mason history and I think that can be credited to how close are team has gotten and how hard everyone works.”
Many seniors received All-District awards as they finish their final season. D’Montae Noble was named the Bull-Run District offensive player of the year and received All-District offensive first team as running back and kick receiver. Hunter Sulc was on All-District defensive first team as linebacker.
The football team improved vastly over the course of the season, starting out with a record of 2-1 and ending with a record of 8-4. The Mason offense improved especially this year, beating Madison County away with a score of 42-27, as opposed to last year’s score of 6-28.
Both Head Coach Green, Assistant Coach Larcamp, and Coach Amerine have had numerous years of experience in coaching the Mason football team, helping the development of the program and athletes.
“They’ve all worked hard.. I’m really happy with the progress they’ve made,” said Coach Larcamp.
