The Mustangs Varsity Field Hockey team’s Senior Night was certainly one to remember, as the team dominated Brentsville, winning 5-0 on Thursday, Oct. 10th. The Mustangs defense was once again phenomenal, barely letting the ball cross over into their own territory, let alone actually giving Brentsville any chance to score. Their performance was most definitely one worthy of their Senior Night.
After the dominating performance, head coach Anne Steenhoek was asked how the team prepares such an impressive and lights-out defense.
“We focus on the basics. A lot of time focusing on carrying the ball out of the circle and making a smart pass,” Steenhoek replied. Steenhoek also added that they make a point to avoid the middle, which makes it harder for the other team to steal the ball.
The team is only helped by a strong relationship between coaches and players.
“They [the coaches] know how to get us fired up, and they focus on our strengths, provide constructive feedback, and create a positive environment that keeps us confident and focused. We all trust their decisions, and that confidence definitely shows on the field,” said senior Gia Khan.
While their defensive performance could not be ignored, their offense stole the spotlight. They started hot, with two goals inside the first ten minutes. They clearly never looked back, dominating Brentsville in every phase.
Their only slight mishap was being unable to convert on a penalty shot with ten minutes left in the fourth quarter, but by then the game had already been decided. An impressive game from the team’s seniors was the cherry on top of this win.
After this performance, Meridian has added yet another shutout to their resume, shutting out a shocking ten teams. In their next game, Meridian will host Annandale on Oct. 17, at 7:00 PM.
