The Mustangs Boys Basketball team are Regional champions. On Thursday, Feb. 27, the Mustangs crushed the William Monroe Dragons 59-34. While this is a monumental win, the Mustangs are certainly not satisfied. They will look to take home the State Championship.
The Regional Championship was never a close game, as the Mustangs got off to a hot start, ending the first quarter up 15-4. After that, they never looked back. In the second half, once the game was truly out of reach, the players seemed to become even more aggressive and energized, as William Monroe’s players became more frustrated. When Head Coach Jim Smith was asked if this difference in play was a conscious coaching decision, he said it was not.
“I think what happens is you get a big lead, 20-25 points like that, and you get lulled into thinking ‘Ok, the game’s over,’ and you relax a little bit,” said Coach Smith.
After such a dominant win, Coach Smith commented on how he intends to keep the team focused for states.
“We have great senior leadership. Our five seniors, they’ve been here working the whole time I’ve been here. They’re very focused, they’re great leaders.” said Coach Smith.
Those seniors were crucial to the victory, with Isaac Rosenberger and John Lyman hitting several big-time shots.
Even though the game wasn’t a nailbiter, fans at the game enjoyed watching the impressive performance.
“It was great to see the team play well together,” said junior Zane Qumseya.
The Mustangs chase for the State Championship continues on Tuesday, Mar. 4, against New Kent High School. Be sure to fill out the stands and show support for the team!
