Ever in the mood to watch a film that will always stay great no matter how many times you rewatch it? Many films have come out recently that are pretty solid–but they simply can’t stand a chance against the classics.
“Once Upon a Time in Hollywood” by Quentin Tarantino
Starring forever-famous actors like Margot Robbie, Brad Pitt, and Leonardo DiCaprio, This film takes place during the 70s and the aesthetic is vibrant throughout the movie. Just a quick warning that Tarantino’s obsession with feet does appear in the film… my advice? Just skip the scene where Margot Robbie goes to the theater to see her own film. The most memorable part of this film is when Brad Pitt is driving around Hollywood and the audience sees the world around him. It’s fascinating to see what Hollywood was like in the 70s. If you’re obsessed with the 70s era (like I am) or just really great acting, then this film is for you.
“When Harry met Sally” by Rob Reiner
Starring Billy Crystal and Meg Ryan, a Friend to lovers trope. This movie is a fan favorite, a staple name in every household. It follows two frustrated friends figuring out the ups and downs of becoming something more. I’ve only seen half of the movie, but its reputation precedes itself. I’d put this down for those who are a little confused by love (who isn’t?).
“Ferris Bueller’s Day Off” by John Hughes
This 80’s film is a staple in the entertainment industry when it comes to classics, and deserves recognition as one of the best ten movies. There is no one genre to classify this movie— it finds a way to hit every single emotion in about an hour and thirty minutes. All the characters play a role in making this movie become such a hit. The cast is well-balanced, providing a perfect list of tropes to bring them together. Ferris Buller plays the spontaneous spirit, his best friend Cameron Frye as the scaredy-cat, and Ferris’ girlfriend, Sloane, tagging along to add to the fun. This is one of my favorite movies of all time. Iconic actors, songs, and scenes; all the components of a superb watch.
“The Revenant” by Alejandro González Iñárritu
If you enjoy watching gruesome movies set in an older time period, then this film is the perfect fit for you. I remember watching a fight scene where Leonardo DiCaprio’s character fought a bear. I know that it sounds crazy, but it’s true! Fighting a CGI bear wasn’t very common in films at the time. At times, I had to look away from bloody battles, but overall it was a phenomenally well done movie and I would definitely watch it again.
“The Incredibles” by Brad Bird
This is a family favorite, and a great pick for a comfort film. I still press play on this movie when I don’t know what to watch. Weaving together a traditional superhero story with a family sitcom vibe, the movie crafts a compelling narrative that is as fun as it is engaging. There are three of “The Incredibles” movies, and they are all really fun and memorable to watch.
Films can range from obscure and rich to light-hearted. These movies all incorporate whatever genre you want to watch, and they do it amazingly. Not all the movies are my favorites but they’re definitely a staple in the entertainment industry.
