The Metropolitan Museum of Art has stunned viewers with its attendees outfits since 1948, and this year was no different. Per tradition, the event took place on May 1, the first Monday in May. The dress code was “tailored for you,” which supported the Costume Institute’s spring exhibition “Superfine: Tailoring Black Style,”
Celebrities including Colman Domingo, Lewis Hamilton, A$AP Rocky, and Pharrell Williams were co chairs of the gala alongside Vogue editorial director and chief Anna Wintour. As always, there were some hits and misses among the attendees of the event as the theme was interpreted in a variety of different ways.
One of the biggest standouts of the night was from actor Damson Idris, who turned heads in Tommy Hilfiger with a cinematic-style outfit change on the red carpet. The actor arrived in a race car wearing a Tommy Hilfiger race suit, two attendants then ripped off the suit to reveal a custom red Tommy Hilfiger suit.

Another standout of the night was by singer Sabrina Carpenter, who arrived in a Louis Vuitton blazer with a wispy train. Although many have criticized the singer for her outfit looking too costume-like, I believe that she took her own signature spin on the theme which made her outfit standout.

Looking at some of the more questionable outfits present on the red carpet, I found that many people didn’t accurately follow the dress code. Instead, many celebrities simply wore suits or gowns with no significance to the theme of “tailored for you,” which I found to be very disappointing.
Some of the celebrities whose interpretations of the theme didn’t quite land for me were “Stranger Things” stars Maya Hawke and Sadie Sink. While they both looked stunning in their custom Prada gowns, many were unsure how their outfits related to the dress code.
Sadie Sink made her Met Gala debut in a sheer lace gown, while Maya Hawke wore a bright pink ensemble and a nude cape.

Personally, I don’t understand why one would come to the Met Gala, an event solely based on the idea of creating and admiring fashion, while completely disregarding the theme. This feeling was widely shared among viewers, with many on social media quick to point out the actresses’ missed theme interpretation.
In a night meant to celebrate fashion and personal expression for the sake of art, some attendees embraced the theme, while others overlooked the opportunity. The Met Gala has remained an iconic part of fashion that both viewers and attendees look forward to annually, but one could argue that celebrities are ignoring what makes the Met Gala special.
