The Mustangs Varsity Field Hockey team handily beat Mt. Vernon 3-0 on Wednesday, Aug 27, 2025.
The first half of the game was a back and forth affair, with neither team having put up a score by halftime. A goal by the Mustangs late in the third period opened the floodgates for two more scores in quick succession that ultimately put the game out of reach for Mt. Vernon.
After playing one of the most frustrating first halves a team can endure, the Mustangs showed incredible resilience to hit the ground running in the second half and make the box score of the game look like a blowout.
Coach Anne Steenhoek commented on the difficulties of the first half and how she rallied them during halftime. “Urgency, that was really the key. When the ball gets in the circle, we need to be pounding the boards, and just be really urgent to score.”
She also mentioned telling the team they needed to play more aggressively and as a unit. “Stepping to the ball, moving to the ball, and connecting with their teammates. Those were the three things I really talked about [at halftime].”
Ultimately, the first goal of the game wound up being the turning point, and it proved to be exactly what the Mustangs needed to pull away from the struggling Mt. Vernon squad.
Steenhoek thought that the first goal was the turning point of the game, saying. “I think that was what really moved things along for us and told us, ‘Okay, we can score,’” said Steenhoek.
This win moves them to 1-1 on the season, and gives the team great momentum to build on for their next game against Liberty High School on Thursday, Sep 4.
