In a thrilling season opener against the formidable Skyline Hawks, the Meridian girls varsity volleyball team put on a show, taking hold of the game despite a tough second set, seeing off an exciting win last Monday, August 25th.
As the game set off, the Mustangs got off to a strong start. They dominated the first set after surviving a couple of tense, back-and-forth exchanges.
Going into the second set, the Mustangs faced a seemingly rejuvenated Skyline team, which took full advantage of Meridian’s poor serving and net play, ultimately leading to an unexpected set loss, tying the game 1-1.
With the Mustangs’ form and level of play deteriorating, Coach Milena Racic knew she had to do something to get them back in the game. “[I] changed the lineup and put in a fresh new set of players,” said Racic. The team didn’t disappoint, and just as Racic had hoped, the new set of players seized the opportunity in front of them, delivering a spectacular third set, built around a strong team performance and immaculate serving play.
The fourth set was another display of brilliance from the Mustangs. Meridian dominated the fourth set, capping off their victory with a commanding 25-12 set win.
In a post-game interview with the Lasso, Coach Racic commented on their win, saying, “I am most proud of our bench energy, and our new players’ performances.”
Coach Racic’s quote tells the story of the game, as throughout the Mustangs’ win tonight, the new faces in the team brought the energy and performance that was needed to get the win, reflecting the team’s great spirit and chemistry.
The Meridian Mustangs’ opening win at home starts their season off strong, and they hope to keep this momentum throughout the rest of the year.
