On Thursday, Aug. 28 after a tough game of hitting, passing, setting, and cheering, Kettle Run swept Meridian 3-0 in an unfortunate loss. It was only the second home game of the season , but it shows how challenging the upcoming season might be.
In spite of the defeat, sophomore Sahana Cushman stayed positive. “We actually did pretty good on our side, we played a fast game and put in a lot of effort,” said Cushman. For one of the first games of the 2025-2026 volleyball season, there was a lot of “good chemistry,” according to Cushman, which is key for a successful game.
Junior Walewska Negron also kept an optimistic view on the game. “We played really well as a team: we got more plays in the game because we had competition, and we learned more techniques and plays,” Negron said.
Considering the large student section, and the fact that Kettle Run is one of the better teams in the volleyball league, the Mustangs did well under pressure and put up a good fight. Furthermore, the loss signifies tremendous improvement from last year, as the team did well by “Playing the game we know, sticking to our basics, and not freaking out,” Negron commented.

Regardless of the well-played game, “the team needs to work on serve receive and improve some hitting errors too,” Cushman explained, “I think we’ll get that with time because I feel like that’s also a chemistry thing, and it’s the beginning of the season.”
As next week’s games against Unity Reed and Fauquier approach, will the Mustangs be able to use what they learned to beat their next opponents?
