On Sep 29, the Mustang girl’s volleyball team took on the neighboring Justice Wolves. The Mustangs were determined to beat the 6A Wolves, as they had already seen each other play in a tournament at Justice, where Meridian placed 2nd overall.
The game started with a cool and easy first set. The Mustangs were playing at their highest level, and Justice was forced to call a timeout with the score at 15-8 in Meridian’s favor. The girls did not let the timeout phase them, and continued to increase their lead, beating Justice 25-14.
However, the second set proved to be more of a challenge for the Mustangs, as they began to fall behind, eventually having to call a timeout while they were down 19-15. The Mustangs continued to fight hard, but were unable to catch up with the Wolves, until they called their second and last timeout with the score at 20-23. This was Meridian’s last chance at a comeback. This timeout ended up being a turning point for the Mustangs, as they immediately “sided-out” and went on a streak, tying the score at 23-23. This forced Justice to call a timeout, but it was no use. After many heated rallies, the Mustangs pulled away, winning the set 28-26.
“I think that our blocks were really there and the timing for our blocks,” commented junior Ariel Soya,” There was a lot more chemistry in that game, and there was definitely hustle for that ball. Our serve receive was also really good, and I think we only had two missed serves in total.”

After such a close set, the Mustangs were determined to not let the Wolves get close to winning again. “[In the third set] there was a lot of energy, and hype from the bench,” Soya said.
The girls worked as a team and finished off the game as quickly as possible.
The third set was too fast-paced for the Wolves to put up a fight, and the Mustangs wiped them out with newfound determination. With a final score of 25-12, the Mustangs emerged victorious, with their biggest win yet. Against a 6A school, Meridian proved their talent and determination, leaving big hopes for regionals and states later in the season.
