In a three-period display of strength from the Mustangs, Meridian Field Hockey emerged victorious Wednesday night in a dominant performance over Thomas A. Edison High School.
The senior night win extended the team’s win streak to 11 games, as the Mustangs cut the game short and won by mercy rule, fueled by strong offensive play that started right out of the gate.
Following an exciting 5-0 win from the Mustangs’ JV field hockey team, the Mustangs opened swiftly with a goal from Zorah Randhawa just seven minutes into the game. The goal put them on the board early, giving Meridian a 1-0 lead.
After a scoreless period full of back and forth play at midfield, Meridian was able to add to their tally with a late second period goal from senior Sara Meade.
This would not mark the end of the success from the seniors, as they would collectively go on to score four of the six goals in the game.
Seniors have a strong impact on the team.
“[We have] two seniors leading in scoring,” head coach Anne Steenhoek explained.
Coming out of halftime with a 2-0 lead, the Mustangs had unfinished business, and senior Emma Flanagan opened the scoring with a goal 37 seconds into the game. Flanagan continued her dominant night with a goal just four minutes later, giving Meridian a commanding 4-0 lead.
The Mustangs took a five point lead after a second goal from Randhawa with eight minutes remaining in what would be the final period.
Meade then capped the night off with her second goal, resulting in a commanding final score of 6-0.
The dominating win over the Eagles leaves fans looking towards the playoffs, as this win moves Meridian to 11-1 on the season on an 11-game winning streak.
Coach Steenhoek has her sights set on the playoffs. “We want to finish on top for [the remainder] of our games,” Steenhoek noted.
The Mustangs will look to continue their strong play at Brentsville on Oct 14.
