Each week, the Lasso Editorial Board will comment on an issue that is relevant to the students at George Mason High School. We strive to present a student-oriented opinion about topics big and small that matter to all of Mustang Nation.
Senior year is by far the busiest year of high school, and for some, the stress of deciding what you’ll be doing in your next phase of life along with maintaining a balance between schoolwork, clubs, and jobs is already taking its toll.
Did we mention it’s only the third week of school?
The year is painfully crawling by, and seniors need something to look forward to that comes sooner than graduation day or even second semester. They need a break. Luckily, while underclassmen students are taking the PSAT on October 19, the Class of 2017 will receive a day of de-stressing organized by the school.
Senior Day was created as a way to give seniors something fun to do while the rest of the school is busy testing. The plan is to start the day with an activity voted on by the senior class, and end with a barbecue on the football field. Last week, Principal Hills invited seniors to have a round-robin discussion during Mustang Block about the types of activities they’d be interested in doing at the beginning of the day before the big outdoor celebration.
Out of the brainstorming came ideas like yoga lessons, self defense training, and a discussion on college culture emphasizing issues like consent and drinking responsibly. Some students thought the day could be used as a study hall to catch up on work, and others wanted to be relieved of stress mentally through mindfulness lessons and therapy dogs.
We encourage all seniors to go online and vote for their ideal Senior Day activity.
It’s great to see the school put in extra effort to make some aspects of senior year more enjoyable. What’s even more exciting to see is that students are being able to give input on the kinds of activities they would like to do. We’re excited to see how Senior Day turns out, and we hope to see other types of new activities and traditions created for our fellow students to enjoy.
