Every year, students at Mason eagerly await the Service Fair. Some are excited for the 20-minute break to just talk with friends, others look forward to the free candy. But for many, it’s an opportunity to sign up for great community service opportunities, such as decorating store windows for Halloween or volunteering at the library.
“It’s important to show students all the opportunities to help out [with]. I had no idea that there were so many activities in Falls Church,” sophomore Lila Washa said.
The community service options included service opportunities with the Robotics Team, Qualcomm Thinkabit Lab, Be Involved Become a Friend, Mount Daniel Homework Club, Teddy Bear 5K, Future Educators of America, UNICEF, Liberty in North Korea. As well as, helping with the Book Sale, Farm Day, Many Styles Library Teen Section, and The Food Drive.
One of the most popular forms of community service that can be signed up for at the Service Fair this year is painting the windows of stores in Falls Church City for Halloween. This is a fun activity that can be shared with people of all ages.
“Businesses are participating now even though in the beginning they weren’t sure,” said Marty Behr, creator of the Halloween painting in Falls Church City. “The school kids come and the grandparents come. It’s just a popular event…people tend to look forward to it.”
The Service Fair gives all the students at George Mason tremendous opportunities to do something great for the school, the community, and the world.
