Top eight celebrity scandals of 2018

  1. Pete Davidson and Ariana Grande engagement (and breakup)

On May 18th, two weeks after the relationship between pop star, Ariana Grande and rapper, Mac Miller ended, Grande announced her relationship with Saturday Night Live comedian, Pete Davidson. A month later, headlines exploded as the new couple announced their engagement over instagram. However, this only lasted for a few months before the couple announced their break up on October 14, soon after Miller passed away due to a drug overdose. In her November single, “Thank U, Next,” Grande explicitly mentions both exes and their impact on her life.

After expressing his vocal support for President Trump and sporting his signature MAGA hat on multiple occasions, acclaimed rapper, Kanye West, visited the White House on October 11 to discuss topics such as criminal justice reform, tax breaks, mental health, and inner city violence. According to ABC News, the president responded shortly after the meeting that West could “very well be” a future presidential candidate. West received a lot of backlash for this, especially from the hip hop community. The backlash increased when he appeared on SNL shortly after with his MAGA hat and a passionate pro-Trump speech.

  1. Kylie Jenner’s secret pregnancy

After pregnancy rumors in September of 2017, reality T.V. star, Kylie Jenner publicly announced the birth of her daughter, Stormi, with rapper Travis Scott on February 4. Although the couple reportedly told close friends and family, the public was kept in the dark until after the baby was born. Jenner later announced that despite no official marriage, the baby would take Scott’s original last name, furthering rumors that the couple also had a secret engagement before the baby. Throughout November, Scott has been on tour, with Jenner by his side.

  1. T.V. show, “Roseanne”, canceled after twitter incident

After the popular show, “Roseanne,” was revived in March, it was quickly pulled after show creator and star Roseanne Barr tweeted racist comments about former President Barack Obama’s Senior Advisor, Valerie Jarrett. Soon after the tweet, the show’s cancellation was announced along with an apology on twitter from Barr. Additionally, the popular streaming site, Hulu, announced that all episodes would be removed from the site. Although the tweet appeared as the ultimate breaking point of the show, ABC executives expressed concern leading up to the revival and during the first weeks of the show’s 2018 release.

  1. Kevin Hart steps down as Oscars host

Just days after comedian Kevin Hart was announced to host the 2019 oscars in early December, he stepped down due to backlash about past homophobic tweets. Although the comedian has continued to receive criticisms about the tweets, some stars, including Saturday Night Live Weekend Update Host Michael Che and actor Nick Cannon, are coming to his defense, calling on other scandals including controversial tweets from famous actors that received much less backlash. As of now, the Oscars have still yet to find a host to replace Hart.  

  1. Logan Paul’s suicide forest video

After popular YouTube vlogger, Logan Paul released a January video in Japan’s Aokigahara forest, he received massive backlash from the YouTube community. Although Paul has been involved in controversies about videos in the past, this received international attention and criticisms. In the video, Paul visits the Aokigahara forest, also known as suicide forest, in Japan, and reacts to a dead body that is not shown on camera. Although the video had a disclaimer in the description about the content of the video, Paul deleted it soon after and posted an apology to his channel.

  1. Cardi B and Nicki Minaj feud

Although tension between top selling rappers Nicki Minaj and Cardi B began in 2017, the feud appeared to reach its breaking point in early September at an event at New York Fashion Week. Leading up to the event, some rumors emerged that new music from Minaj in April was directed at Cardi B. Although these were later debunked, the two rappers allegedly exchanged verbal altercations that were followed by an Instagram post from Cardi B addressing the incident and calling out Minaj for comments on Cardi B’s newborn child.

1. Demi Lovato’s overdose

In early August, singer Demi Lovato was hospitalized and later taken to rehab after an overdose at her Hollywood Hills home. After issues with cocaine and Oxycontin in the past, Lovato’s friends and family were reportedly attempting to keep the singer away from heavy drugs in the weeks leading up to her recent overdose. Lovato has been extremely open about her struggles with addiction. However, following a party the day before, Lovato was found in critical condition to which she was revived with Narcan, an emergency medication used mainly for opioid overdoses.
