The first movie adaptation of Stephen Sondheim’s musical “West Side Story” was released in 1961, but society has changed a lot since the 60 years between the original and Steven Spielberg’s version. However, I was still excited to see the movie on Disney+, which was released on March 2.

In the same story as the original picture, protagonists Maria and Tony fall in love with each other, as rival gangs fight in their city. Maria’s brother, Bernardo, leads a gang called the Sharks as Tony is a member of the Jets, a rival gang. The movie resembles a modern Romeo and Juliet, as characters sing their suffering and demonstrate that there are other strong forces in the world than hate.

Although the story is loved by many people, there are certainly moments in the 1961 movie that haven’t aged well. For example, the Spanish that the characters use are often “throw away lines,” which don’t add anything to the story. The old version also doesn’t demonstrate relatable attributes in its characters. Finally, the Nuyorican culture is absent from the movie.

The new movie is so much better than the original movie; besides portraying the life of immigrants as complex, the producers worked hard with the Latino cast to create a realistic experience. If you need an example, look no farther than the new Anita, played by Ariana DeBose. The actress performed in Broadway’s “Hamilton,” and, not long ago, won the Oscar for the Best Supporting Actress in a Musical for her role in “West Side.”

In summary, the new adaptation of West Side Story is a joy for the whole family. Between songs and an emotional story, Steven Spielberg created a movie we will be watching for decades.
