Coming off of a 40-22 loss to Sidwell Friends, the George Mason varsity football team (1-1) is preparing for this week??s home match against the Luray County Bulldogs (2-0). The Mustangs will take on the Bulldogs at 7:30 pm, at home, on Friday, September 18.
According to linemen coach, Ryan Larcamp, last week??s loss was primarily attributed to Mason??s inability to tackle and lack of confidence going into the first half. Sidwell outscored Mason in the first half, leaving Mason with a 0-33 deficit to come back from. However, Mason came together at the end, pushing back against Sidwell, pulling out 22 points in the last quarter.
??We learned a valuable lesson about playing a whole game,?? said head coach, Tony Green. ??I??m expecting my players to play hard.??
Coach Green will be focusing on going back to basics with his players, primarily blocking and tackling. Luray has been known to run the ball, meaning Mason will have to shut down their offense quickly and force them to pass.
??We??re sticking with our game plans,?? said Green. ??I??ve moved plays around in our backfield. I think we can get ??em.??
The plays are meant to maximize the running game, using star running back, junior Dustin Green, and fullback, senior Hunter Sulc.
??I expect for us to bounce back and show that we are capable of playing better than we did last week,?? said Dustin Green.
Last year, Mason lost 7-28 at Luray, their third game of the season. This year, the Mustangs are coming into the game with the same record as last year, in the hope that their first two games of the season have prepared them adequately.
