Fall sports power rankings
October 8, 2019
1. Volleyball
Coming in at first this week is the George Mason varsity volleyball team. The team is on a six-game winning streak, outscoring their opponents 18 sets to three in that span. The team is composed of only juniors and sophomores, in what was supposed to be a “rebuilding year”. However, the team is already back to their winning ways.
2. Cross Country
Number two is the cross country team, which is undefeated this year. Top times from their last meet include a 17:15 5K from junior Colson Board and a 20:50 5K from sophomore Lauren Mellon. Despite the loss of many top performers who graduated, the XC team is still looking strong.
3. Football
Football comes in at number three, with the boys having a 3-2 record on the year. They are on a three-game winning streak with a point differential of +106 in that span. After coming off the Homecoming game win, the team will have a bye week.
4. Field Hockey
Field hockey comes in at fourth – they are on a three-game win streak. Two of the games were conference games, where Mason beat tough competitors Kettle Run and Fauquier. The team is 6-6 on the year. Junior Ashley Zigler leads the team in goals with 12 on the season.
5. Golf
Coming in at fifth place is the golf team. The team finished fourth of six teams in the district and seventh of 11 in the region. Unfortunately, the team did not qualify for states, yet sophomore Jack Biggs earned all-district honors this year.
