In a virtual environment, it can be hard to get to know people, especially teachers. This year at George Mason, there are several new staff members, including Mr. Marvin Wooten, the new athletic director. However, even through a computer, it was hard to miss Wooten’s energy and passion towards the students at Mason and his position in the administration.

This is Mr. Wooten’s fourth year as an athletic director, his first couple of years being at Woodbury High School in Woodbury, Minnesota. Before becoming an athletic director, he was a PE coach and behavior specialist.

Coach Wooten isn’t new to the area, though. He was born in Washington D.C., grew up in Reston, Virginia, and graduated from South Lakes High School. Growing up and through high school, he played football and basketball, and even started a sneaker club at his school.

“We just talked about the latest trends [in sneakers],” Mr. Wooten said, mentioning that he worked at Foot Locker when he was in high school, which helped spike his interest. 

After high school, he attended Howard University for his undergraduate, and took one of his first teaching jobs at a school in Fairfax.

As far as sports go, Mr. Wooten is a big local fan, and likes to watch the “[Washington] Nationals, Capitals, and Mystics,” while also keeping up with his alma mater, Howard University. He also roots for other local colleges like Georgetown University and Maryland University.

As for the NFL, though, Mr. Wooten’s go to team is the Dallas Cowboys.

“I’ve always liked them…I don’t know why,” he said with a laugh. 

Besides watching sports, Coach Wooten is a big fan of the Marvel movies, and has “recently gotten into the comics.” He also enjoys spending time with his family, whether it’s taking their puppy on a walk, going on a hike, or exploring the local restaurants. 

When asked what his favorite place to eat is near George Mason High School, Mr. Wooten responded immediately.

“Taco Bamba,” he said. “I love that place.”

So far, Mr. Wooten has adjusted to life at Mason well, and enjoys working with everyone at the high school. He likes the “small town vibe” of Falls Church City, and can’t wait to meet all of the students in person. 

Right now, though, he acknowledges the fact that he’s had to get creative. For example, this year’s club fair was held online. He doesn’t want the virtual atmosphere to keep students from each other.

Coach Wooten is urging all students to get involved and join a virtual club, in the hopes that we can still “stay connected.”
