Freshmen
Jay Nesson scores a goal his homecoming date; Lila Washa said yes!
Jay Nesson asked Lila Washa to Homecoming with a poster and a soccer ball. The poster read “Lila, it is my goal to kick it with you at homecoming.” The cheesy line is based on the fact that Washa has played soccer for many years and Nesson knew how much she loved the sport.
“[Lila] plays soccer, so what I did was I found a green piece of paper and I thought I could make a field out of it by putting white-out on it. [By] making the lines and everything, it looked pretty cool,” said Nesson, when asked what his inspiration was.
Sophomores
It takes sophomore Kiernan Bartlett, and a little pixie dust, to make Eliza Bonilla’s homecoming proposal magical.
For our sophomore couple, Kiernan Bartlett and Eliza Bonilla are at the top of our list with this Peter Pan based proposal. Kiernan surprised Eliza with flowers and a poster that said, “ Second star on the right and straight on til homecoming?” A lot of hard work, thought, and time went into this grand proposal, so it is no surprise this proposal was a success.
“I knew that Eliza really likes Peter Pan and it took a really long time to think of it. I was trying to be creative,” said Bartlett.
“Peter Pan is my favorite thing in the whole entire world and so that was pretty awesome,” said Bonilla.
Juniors
Ryan Calabrese builds the perfect homecoming proposal for Andrea Dilao.
Junior Ryan Calabrese asked junior Andrea Dilao with classic childhood toy: LEGOS. The sign was pieced with Legos spelling out, “LEGO TO HOCO.” Catching his homecoming date completely by surprise with the poster and red roses.
“It was really cute, he told me he came up with it the night before and he had been doing it all night. Because it’s like little lego pieces glued on, to make ‘Lego and Hoco,’” said Dilao. “The effort was very appreciated!.
Seniors
Senior Devin Thomas finds an angel as his homecoming date, senior Kate Mills.
Senior Devin Thomas surprised fellow senior Kate Mills with a floating poster saying, “We’d be in heaven if Kate and Devin go to Homecoming.” The poster was held up by countless balloons that floated up right next to Mills’ window, so that when she opened her shades, she would be surprised. Of course, she ran down to where Thomas was and replied ‘yes’.
Mills said she was very confused when her friend, senior Corrine Carson, who was also in on the proposal, told her to open her shades.
“I was like ‘No, why would I do that?’ and she just said ‘No, really, you have to open them’ and I [did]. It was really exciting,” said Mills.
Honorable Mentions
Senior Matt Mineo and his date, Blaise Sevier, run toward a great night at homecoming.
Senior Matt Mineo hand made a poster for his proposal, senior Blaise Sevier, that read, “Blaise, Trade in your spikes 4 heels. Homecoming with me?”
“I knew I wanted to incorporate cross country because I knew that Blaise runs cross country, but at the same time I didn’t want it to be too cheesy or corny, so I spent a lot of time brainstorming. It was actually a lot of hard work,” said Mineo.
Mineo surprised Sevier with this creative poster, flowers, and her favorite candy.
“I’m very excited. It’s going to be a great time with all of our friends!” said Mineo.
Patrick Field and Sophie Hill.
Another Senior, Patrick Field, deserves an honorable mention for this anniversary gift. He asked fellow senior, Sophie Jane Hill to be his homecoming date… again. He created a handmade sign that read, “Soph, In honor of our 1 year hoco anniversary… Homecoming? ” since the two had gone to homecoming together last year.
“Since this is my second year in a row asking her, I decided it would be cool to incorporate that into the homecoming proposal,” said Fields.
He popped the question with his poster, candy, and flowers for Sophie Jane during Mustang Block. His proposal was greeted with a smile, a hug, and a “yes”.
“I wasn’t nervous the day before because I felt like she wanted me to ask her, but then when the day came, I had some anxiety. I wouldn’t say I was nervous though,” said Fields.
Judging by these amazing and thoughtful proposals of this year, homecoming is sure to be a blast. Students will be walking through the George Mason doors on Saturday night beginning at 8 p.m. in the main gym, to find food, drinks, and dancing.
