Senior Griffin Harrison served the ball during the spring 2021 volleyboys game. For the fall game, school administrators changed the name of volleyboys to volleyall. “We want to keep [an event] that’s fun, but not necessarily exclusive,” Associate Principal Dave Serensits said.

School administrators changed the name of the name of volleyboys, the annual intramural volleyball game played between juniors and seniors, to “volleyall.” They decided to change the name in an effort to promote inclusivity and create a better reflection of the school community.

“Times have changed,” Associate Principal Dave Serensits said. “We felt that it was dated. We didn’t want to have something gender specific as part of the name.”

“We want to keep something that’s fun, but not necessarily exclusive,” he added.

“We’ve certainly heard from students that inclusivity really matters, that things don’t feel like they are gender specific or role specific in many ways,” said Head of Secondary Schools Valerie Hardy.

The gender specificity of the name of volleyboys was what drove its name to be changed as opposed to the name for powderpuff, which is the annual intramural football game played alongside volleyall. A discussion will be opened in the future about the name of powderpuff.

Given the desire to change the name of volleyboys before the event, students were not directly included in the decision to change the name of volleyboys. “We need more students at this table,” Hardy said, adding that she will look for more student voices for the upcoming powderpuff renaming discussion.

Given that the actual event is facing no significant change, many students have had neutral reactions to the changing of the name.

“If it makes people feel more included, do it,” senior volleyball coach Lily Kulok said. “I’ve been waiting to be a coach, and in the end it doesn’t really matter what the name of the event is.”
