A Look into October’s Best Films

Petra Jones

Over twenty new movies came to streaming services and theaters this past month. But what’s on the must-watch list?

No Time To Die

First off is the 27th movie in the James Bond franchise, “No Time To Die,” starring Daniel Craig. The franchise has been around for fifty-eight years and has yet to disappoint. The recently released movie is already a big hit, and I recommend going to the big screen theater to see this high action movie. But interspersed in the action-packed scenes are emotional moments. Words can’t describe how much I cried during this movie– you’ll definitely want to pack some tissues when you head into the theater. This movie will have you sitting on the edge of your seat and then tearing up.

Dune

Next on the list is the highly anticipated “Dune.” It’s been released in theaters and on the streaming service HBO Max. People are already raving about the cast, which includes Timothée Chalamet, Zendaya, Jason Momoa, and Rebecca Ferguson. Based on the best selling book “Dune” by Frank Herbert, the story follows Paul Atreides (Chalamet), a young man born into a family beyond his understanding. He travels to the most dangerous planet in the universe to ensure a safe future for his family and people.

Halloween Kills

It wouldn’t be an October movie list without some fright. “Halloween Kills,” directed by David Gordon Green, is a must-watch. A horror icon, Michael Myers, is back, and Jamie Lee Curtis, an OG Michael Myers cast member, takes on the Halloween franchise for the last time as Laurie Strode. The nightmare isn’t over as the unstoppable killer, Myers, escapes from Laurie’s trap and continues his ritual bloodbath. Injured and taken to the hospital, Laurie fights through the pain as she inspires residents of Haddonfield to rise up against Myers. The characters try to end the killer and terminate his reign of terror once and for all in this final film. However, I hold out hope that this isn’t the last of the iconic Halloween series.

Last Night in Soho

Number four on the must watch list is “Last Night in Soho,” starring Anya Taylor-Joy. It hasn’t come out yet, but there is a lot of hype around this psychological horror film.  A new fashion designer, Eloise (Taylor-Joy), mysteriously finds out that she is able to enter the 1960s, where she encounters a wannabe singer. However, the glamour is not all it appears to be, and the singer, Sandie, haunts Eloise until dreams of the past start to crack and splinter into something far darker. Taylor-Joy was great in the Netflix limited series “The Queen’s Gambit,” so if she acts how she did in that show, “Last Night in Soho” will be a hit.

The Last Duel

If you’re looking for a little more drama, check out the newly released “The Last Duel.” The film, a historic drama based on a true story and starring Jodie Comer, is sure to make you gasp. Jean de Carrouges, played by Matt Damon, is a respected knight known for his bravery and skill on the battlefield. Jacques Le Gris, played by Adam Driver, is a squire whose intelligence and eloquence makes him one of the most admired nobles in court. When Le Gris viciously assaults Carrouges’ wife, she steps forward to accuse her attacker, an act of bravery and defiance that puts her life in jeopardy. There are many other stars in this movie’s cast, so be sure to check it out in theaters.
