Destiny, a challenging and fun video game, is in its prime right now. With the release of The Taken King expansion, its community and gamer population has grown bigger than ever. The Taken King has had a major impact on Destiny’s community of gamers, with its addition of new weapons, armor, and missions. For those experienced with Destiny, these changes have really turned the tide of balance between the Darkness and the Guardians.
Year two (of Destiny) started out with a bang! Bungie officially created the third and the most outstanding to date-expansion pack, thanks to its addition of new gameplay styles and features.“The Taken King” had now come to play with the Destiny community, and I was stunned to see it. This expansion exposed players to a new type of foe, an unstoppable force called simply, the “Taken.”
The Taken are creatures of the dark, residing in a world where their own will is being taken away from them. The Taken are led by Oryx, the Taken king. Oryx is the main villain of this new expansion, and came to the system with the one goal in mind: avenging the death of his son, Crota’s. Now Oryx has come to take us all.
This situation was unfamiliar and scary to me as a gamer. Though usually a hunter, I was now the hunted. Because of this, my very existence wavered between the Light and the Dark, which meant that I now had to fight for my life to survive.
Oryx additionally sought out to finish what his son Crota had started, wiping out the entire solar system of Light. Other players and I now had the job of searching the Dreadnaught (Oryx’s huge flying castle in space) for Oryx, and defeating him before he found us first.
I found this to be no easy task.
This raid was the most difficult mission in the entire game of Destiny- it was the hardest challenge I could possibly encounter, because of the complexity and intensity; namely having to fight off enemies while completing a certain task to achieve just a single goal! Yet despite the hardship of the challenges given to us, my friends and I managed to push through the Darkness and conquer that which was most difficult: killing Oryx. This task was difficult because not only did you have to defeat him, but you had to go through complicated trials and tests just to find him first.
This brings me to my favorite aspect of playing Destiny: the fact that you can’t do it alone! Raids and missions require six people to complete, and help create a sense of teamwork and accomplishment. Bungie has successfully achieved the multiplayer online interaction in being part of a community working towards a common goal. In my opinion, it’s a game design that will allow Destiny to continue for a very long time.
But for now, with the demise of Oryx, the gamer has completed all and everything in Destiny to date. We as “Destinians” usually celebrate completing a goal like this, by voicing “Long live the King!” to our Destiny franchise! However, without knowing what’s in store for our future, all we can do is acquire better gear, make new friends, and prepare for what’s coming. What is out there in the endless void of space that’s lurking in the Darkness, waiting and plotting for our demise you ask?
That’s for you and you alone to discover your own Destiny.
