CORRECTION: The student featured in Austin Yoder and Christian Miceli’s video at the beginning of the JV Show was junior Eduardo Gallo not junior Patrick Lin.
This year’s annual JV Show was perfectly timed for the week after homecoming, thus providing students with a great way to keep the energy from Spirit Week going. The show was filled with talent beyond the average school’s standard talent shows acts, including wushu, musical combinations, and featured comedy. As a result of, the JV show, the Student Council Association (SCA) raised about $2,000 for this year’s junior and senior prom.
Starting off the show with a laugh, juniors Austin Yoder and Christian Miceli use their comedic talent to warm the audience up. They made a hilarious iMovie before they came out portraying them fighting off aliens with the alien happening to be fellow student, junior Eduardo Pacheco. The iMovie was a great way to start off the show by making the audience comfortable for the rest of the show.
One of the most unique acts at this year’s show was junior Brandon Dang doing his Chinese martial arts routine. It’s called Wushu, which is derived from traditional Chinese martial arts but is a fairly new sport. Dang’s routine involved high leaps, twirling of the staff, and a lot of balance which made it extraordinary and extremely impressive to watch. Most audience members were blown away and did not expect the out of the ordinary act. Dang will soon be starting a club for people who know about Wushu and also for those who would like to learn.
“It was really exciting! The first night we were really nervous, but Friday night we were really used to the audience and performing,” said Mithi Penaranda.
Though musical acts are very common in the JV show, the quartet incorporated many harmonies and instruments making their performance more engaging. Guzman played the piano and Pernanda played the guitar for the performance as all four girls sing certain parts.
“[The song] had a really nice melody and the harmonies were really cool when they were put together,” said Penaranda when asked about their choice of song.
The jazz band has made an appearance in almost every single JV Show with Mrs. West, the conductor, who also is the co-creator of the JV Show. Following “Skyfall,” the band performed another piece involving impressive saxophone solos by sophomore Peter Haensel and senior Guthrie Edson.
Kiran Menon, Forrest Jones, Nathan Bloomgarden, Neal Marshall, and Michael Curtin perform “Help” by The Beatles as an encore to the first song they played, “Welcome to New York” by the Wombats.
“I kind-of self teach myself. I find the guitar chords online and then I kinda just make up a rhythm to it,” Mary Catherine Donovan said.
“I have always had such a passion for music, and it’s really just the way I express myself. I just love to perform at the JV Show because it’s where I get to what I love to do for anybody who wants to listen,” said Donovan.
The JV Show is a great opportunity for all students like Mary Catherine because it lets the students show the school what they really have a passion for.
