The varsity field hockey team has finished their season with a 15-4 record after a successful and competitive season with Coach Amanda Crider at the helm.
Mason faced heavy competition throughout the season and persevered through a majority of them. Seven games went into overtime, with Mason winning six of them.
“[In the regular season] our most competitive games were the second Kettle Run game… or Patriots [game],” said sophomore midfielder Meredith Johnson.
The team also participated in four post-season games.
In the fourth game, the varsity team traveled three hours to Poquoson, Virginia, to play in the Regional Tournament. Their post-season play concluded with a 1-5 loss.
“It was very emotional at the end, for the seniors especially,” said sophomore midfielder Hope Bossart.
The All-Conference first team included forward Sarah Lubnow, midfielder Caroline Striker, Manon Diz on defense, and goalie, Caroline Duffett. On second team was forward, Korinne Wills. Manon Diz also earned a position on the All-Region team.
“I was really proud of all of us. The competition was a lot more fierce [this season],” said co-captain and senior Callie Gaskins.
The program has come a long way from its official establishment in 2013. Two years ago the field hockey team had a season record of 2-12.
“It is always a building experience when you have a young program,” said Head Coach Amanda Crider. “The girls put in a lot of hard work to make it such a success. We improved on many aspects and it also exposed some aspects for growth.”
Crider has been the varsity coach of girls’ field hockey at GM since its establishment in 2013. The program is still fairly new, but progress has already been made.
“Coming together for a common goal like the way our program has is an absolute blessing to be a part of. They say you can do anything you want to, we wanted to be a successful program and we are surely on the way to becoming that,” said Crider.
