Head varsity softball coach Brian Fowler has his hands full with weightlifting, softball coaching, and maintenance for Falls Church City Public Schools.
Brian Fowler started coaching recreation basketball when JV head coach Andre Jackson noticed his intensity and offered him a spot on staff. Fowler quickly moved up the ranks, taking the position as head coach three years ago as well as taking on the position of weightlifting coach.
Growing up, Fowler learned to be handy in the house and eventually repaired the local bowling alley for a few years. He also played many sports growing up and has three children who have all played sports at Mason. He has been a big part of the athletics program having positions such as a football coach, weightlifting coach, JV head softball coach, varsity softball coach, and head of maintenance which controls upkeep of the athletic fields.
“As I got more involved, I started picking up more responsibilities,” said Fowler talking about his transition into maintenance. “After it would rain, I would fix the field and I even fixed the softball and baseball scoreboards at one point.”
Since maintenance headquarters are at Mason, Fowler can sometimes be seen walking the halls or on school grounds.
“Going to the middle and elementary schools also helps with recruiting,” said Fowler.
This gives the program a chance to see potential even at the younger level. This proves to be efficient as by the time those kids come to JV, some of them have experience and know basics.
As Mason rivals tend to be over one hour away, the opponents tend to grow up in classic “softball and football” country where most athletes have started playing since elementary school. This makes competition difficult for Mason where students must go to other cities to play competitively.
“Keeping it simple, I would just like for us to be a better team when we finish than when we started,” said Fowler.
