It’s the time of year when cold weather starts rolling in and students are impatiently anticipating their winter break. Along with the excitement comes the Share the [G]love drive, the annual community outreach program organized by the George Mason SCA.

For the third year in a row, Mason is holding a drive to collect gently used socks, gloves, and other small winter clothing items. The collected items will be given to FACETS (Fairfax Area Christian Emergency and Transitional Services), a local non-profit organization. FACETS then distributes them to the homeless and people who can’t afford them in the Fairfax area through their campaign to prevent and respond to hypothermia. They have been running this campaign since 2003. They collect winter clothes but are often short on small items like gloves and socks, and Mason’s donations help solve this problem.

“[The clothes] are needed because a lot of people can’t afford to get these items, and because a lot of people who do not have homes spend a lot of time outside in freezing temperatures and socks and gloves are imperative in winter weather,” said Hannah Hiscott, an SCA member organizing the drive.

Share the [G]love has been hugely successful in past years, collecting over 800 items in both 2013 and 2014. This year the SCA is hoping that students will again take part in the drive and collect as many or more items as they have in the past.

The collection is taking place from December 14 to December 18, and donations are being collected in boxes in 3rd block classes. In case helping the community isn’t enough motivation, the class with the most donations will win Duck Donuts. So spread the love and bring in your gloves!
