What is Chanel Beads? The NYC-based Dreampop duo hasn’t figured it out yet on this LP, but it still stands as a valiant first actual release. (Image via Bandcamp)

The mysterious and lush 2024 album “Your Day Will Come” by Chanel Beads is an entire world unto itself. The sprawling nature of the project fits perfectly with the walls upon walls of sounds, blurring together in a way that feels shoegaze-y but completely foreign.

“Dedicated To The World” is a stellar start. The barebones guitar strums next to the electronic and distorted vocals fading out are just trippy enough. The vocals have an engaging levity and the involvement of more orchestral components makes the upbeat nature of this song so much more rewarding.

“Police Scanner,” the second track on the LP, shifts into a much more harmonious state halfway through. The track begins with a down-tempo melody, and the vocals provide a much-needed juxtaposition of light onto this otherwise dark track.

“Urn” is weirdly disharmonious. The notes clash a lot, tuning out at the end of the phrase (Bob Dylan synthesizer program?) but it’s managed and curtailed before anything gets too interesting (or derailed).

I really, really like ambient music. I truly do. I just think it can sometimes be used as a crutch for albums that want to pad out their runtime. Interludes can be a brilliant ingredient in an album, but “Coffee Culture” just doesn’t add anything and feels lazy. The song is just a mid addition that genuinely detracts from the album because the rest of it stands out really well.

“Embarrassed Dog” is another track where the vocals shine. It’s such a contemporary song, and the electronic production and samples really help here. The drums sound great, and all of the song’s different elements are allowed to shine.

“Idea June” clocks in at a minute and a half, but despite the length, it might be my favorite song on the album. The breathy vocals are unexpectedly catchy, and the track feels like it has almost its center of gravity with the cinematic ambient in the background.
