Tuesday, Sep. 18, Meridian Field Hockey beat Fauquier High School 1-0, continuing an undefeated season. Despite the close score, Meridian dominated possession, and outshot the opposition by a vast stretch. This was a highly anticipated game, as Fauquier had instigated pregame trash talk throughout the day. Their bark was much more than their bite, as they didn’t have much offensive production throughout the four quarters.
After the game, Head Coach Anne Steenhoek was asked what the best parts of the game were from her perspective.
“Seeing the girls trust each other when we were passing it to each other, and playing together as a team,” Coach Steenhoek replied. The emphasis on teamwork clearly has been working, as the Mustangs keep on winning. “It’s not one person that is going to be able to win the game for us.”
In preparation for the game, Steenhoek pointed out that they would treat it like every other game, but there was definitely an added mental aspect.
“We didn’t prepare for it any differently, but we knew there would be a mental component that we needed to show up and it wasn’t just playing field hockey, it was being in the right headspace in order to play this team.”
The preparation clearly works, and the Mustangs keep on winning. They will play Fauquier again on Oct. 8, at Fauquier’s field.
