George Mason High School currently offers 22 scholarship opportunities through Naviance and the Student Council Association (SCA) is working to create the 23rd.
The SCA has created a scholarship opportunity for seniors called Project MBC (mind, body and character). The campaign recognizes students for excellence in academic achievements (mind), athletic achievements (body) and contributions that better the community (character). This scholarship proposal is a new addition to the Project MBC campaign and was approved by the SCA in the fall of 2015.
“The grand prize scholarship winner gets $1000 [to go towards their college funds] and is only for seniors,” said Blaise Sevier.
In order to nominate someone for the scholarship, you must take a picture of a student/group of students who have shown an excellent portrayal of the MBC qualities and upload it to Twitter with a description of their accomplishment and the hashtag #MBCGMHS. The twitter hashtag was created in September of 2015 and has already awarded dozens of nominations from both students and teachers.
“Some students aren’t recognized for their achievements and we are trying to give students a chance for scholarships that otherwise may not,” said junior Hannah Hiscott.
Three names are drawn monthly from the nominees who have the chance to win a prize such as pizza or burritos for their great contributions to the community. This is separate from the winner of the scholarship, but all senior names will be included in the grand prize drawing which will be announced in June 2016.
The November winners seniors Zach Welch, Caroline Striker and Christopher Marcus won pizza. The December winners were sophomores Peter Haensel and Meredith Johnson as well as senior Vicky Marie Addo-Ashong who won Chipotle gift cards.
“We hope to sustain this for many years,” said senior SCA President Blaise Sevier.
As the college application process is drawing to a close, what senior wouldn’t want a chance to help pay for their tuition next year?
