Have you ever wondered what your teachers listen to? If Mrs. Hawkesworth rocks out to hip-hop on the way to work? Or if, beneath that unsuspecting aura, Dr. Mecca jams out to reggae? In this new feature, “Mustang Mixes,” we’ll bring you a bit closer to your teachers through their choice in music. This week: English teacher Mr. Peter Laub.
“Know Your Rights” by Clash: “I was probably in high school when I discovered the Clash and it was the single greatest thing that happened to me. This song was used in a scene from the movie “Kill the Messenger” in which the journalist types out the article that found the CIA involved in drug trafficking. As a Journalism teacher and fan of the clash, that scene was glorious.”
“Good Vibrations” by Beach Boys: “One of the best pieces of pop music. The Beach Boys are unbelieveable. No matter what music you listen to, rap, rock, or heavy metal, you should listen to “Good Vibrations” because it is a phenomenal piece of music. It is so well produced. I could talk about the beach boys all day. ”
“I Feel Alright” by Steve Earle: “It is kinda like a bluesy or country song, but it gets me feeling alright.”
“Light Rail Coyote” by Sleater Kinney: “They were a band I discovered in college and I fell in love with [Sleater Kinney]… I like my rock and roll to be loud, aggressive, and fun.”
“Changed the Locks” by Lucinda Williams: “She is kind of a country singer, folk and rock singer. It’s bluesy and empowering, but quite sad. Lucinda Williams is always bordering sad and angry. The song is about an angry breakup and Williams changes the locks of her door, which is like a metaphor for changing the locks of her life.”
