After a remarkable 15-1-1 regular season record, Meridian has secured the top seed in Virginia’s class three division for the first time in the last three years.
With their outstanding record, the Mustangs have once again qualified for the playoffs. They enter this year’s tournament looking to defend their state championship title for the second year in a row.
Meridian’s first game will be against the Kettle Run Cougars on May 28 at home. The last time the Mustangs played them in the regular season, Meridian won 2-1.
“Kettle Run is certainly a good team, but we beat them once so I’m sure we’ll beat them again,” freshman Henry Lee commented. “We’re the defending champions for a reason, and it’s our job to go out there and win the game.”
As the number one seed, the Mustangs enter the game as clear favorites compared to Kettle Run. Meridian’s stats speak for themselves: during the regular season, the defense conceded just 10 goals while the offense scored 50.
In regard to the tournament as a whole, Meridian remains ambitious, with their eyes dead set on the trophy. The Mustangs are currently aiming to secure a third straight state championship in a row.
“We know what it’s like to win in this competition,” said senior Jackson Watt. “We obviously want to win again this year. It won’’t be easy, but we’ve got a great group of guys and I’m confident in our abilities.”
With the home-field advantage and much excitement among the players, the Mustangs are eager to end the season strong and complete the three-peat.
