“Hail, Caesar!” is the latest film in the Coen Brothers’ collection. It is not as complete a story as “Fargo”, nor as funny as “The Big Lebowski”, but provides many laughs and memorable performances, especially from the likes of George Clooney and Alden Ehrenreich.
“Hail, Caesar!” is about real life Hollywood fixer Eddie Mannix (Josh Brolin) during the 1950’s. The film delves into the many problems Mannix must fix, such as a pregnant movie star, a frustrated director, and a kidnapped movie star as well as being offered a lucrative job, all being fixed in quirky and entertaining ways.
As movie star Baird Whitlock (George Clooney) goes missing, Mannix must find the movie star while simultaneously keeping the studio running and making sure the kidnapping is not leaked to the public. The story line shifts from scene to scene with each perfectly casted actor lighting up the screen that ranges from Laurence Lorenz (Ralph Fiennes) and twin journalists played by Tilda Swinton.
The film shows themes of religion and morality in an immoral town known as Hollywood. With the many characters and different, yet interconnected plots changing, the only constant object is Mannix’s moral compass.
The film makes a satire out of 1950’s Hollywood. It includes communist philosophers and writers, Channing Tatum playing a singing and dancing movie star, news hungry journalists, horse riding cowboys, and film epics about Jesus Christ during the Roman Empire.
All of the scenes are interesting and funny in itself, but the transitions and ending seems peculiar and leaves you grasping at straws for a complete ending. The movie depicts the journey of Eddie Mannix rather than its ending.
Although “Hail, Caesar!” is not a perfect film, it is witty and keeps the audience surprised behind each plot twist and laughing after each scene has ended.
