Spring is here and GMHS students are flocking to meetings with their counselors to prepare for the next school year. Between class schedules and college recommendations to SAT’s and ACT’s, our newest college counselor, Ms. Jennifer Fletcher tackles these questions while learning the ropes of Mason. Fletcher replaced our previous counselor, Ms. Judy Bracken, who retired in February.
Fletcher has been involved with the other side of the college process for eight years at three different universities. Her most interesting story from her time spent with undergraduate admissions took place at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign.
“As I was giving a presentation during a college tour, the tornado drill went off and I had to spend an hour in the kitchen with the students and parents. It definitely was not the traditional tour, but everyone got a free t-shirt afterwards,” Fletcher said.
Fletcher started out at her alma mater, Ball State University, in Muncie, Indiana for two years. Then worked at Butler University in Indianapolis, Indiana for two years and finally worked at University of Illinois Urbana–Champaign for four years.
For the past 13 years, she has been focusing her time on raising her kids, but when she was offered the position as a college counselor at Mason, it was a hard opportunity to pass up.
“I missed the academic environment, I always really liked school,” Fletcher said.
Although she has only been at Mason for a month, her positive impact on students and helpful recommendations speak for themselves. Fletcher’s extensive experience with the college admissions process allows Mason students to have a sense for what colleges will truly be looking for.
“Have fun, make it real and put yourself into the shoes of others [to see which college] is the right fit for you,” said Fletcher in advice to the rising juniors who are beginning to look at colleges.
