In the world of boys varsity tennis, the accomplishments range from team achievements to doubles achievements to singles achievements. This year’s varsity tennis team accomplished all three different kinds of titles through freshman Chris Kim, and seniors Zach Talamonti, Douglas Bossart and Thomas Beddow.
Kim, new to Mason tennis this year, had a successful transition into regular season. Placing first in the Conference and second in the Region, he built up a lot of momentum for the tournament moving forward.
“Chris played an unbelievable match. He was probably not favored in the match at all and won in a three setter. It was an incredible victory, the best I have ever seen him play,” tennis coach Matt Hills said on Kim’s final regional match.
Kim was the only Mason tennis players to qualify for the 2A VHSL State Tournament this year, however he lost in the semi-final game against John Reed from Gate City High School.
For the doubles tournaments, Kim and his partner, Beddow, placed first in the District Tournament, first in the Conference Tournament. They advanced to the Region Tournament however lost to Karl Katlaps and Pierce Tarry of Maggie Walker in a 6-3 match.
Bossart and Talamonti had a similar result to Kim and Beddow, dropping out of the tournament at the quarter-final stage.
With three of the four players who made it thus far graduating this year, the Mason Boys Tennis Team is in for an important pre-season next year.
It being his first year on the team and only being a freshman, Kim’s hard work and dedication will surely bring him more major accomplishments for not only him but also for the George Mason Boys Tennis Team.
“I was so proud of him for a freshman to reach that far, it’s very impressive and he worked hard all year to do it,” Hills said explaining Kim’s final game at states.
