The main purpose of the hype squad is keeping up with the twitter account, @GMHype. The account gives updates about games and respective themes. The hype squad is also in charge of leading the cheers in the student section. Members of the hype squad include seniors Jack Rasmussen, Mackenzie Steeves, Sarah Lubnow, and Tina Dao.
“We’re the group that’s in charge of trying to get as many students as possible to come out to sporting events and coordinating dress-up days to kind of create that sense of community. We’re also the people at the games who try to lead the cheers and create a ‘hype’ atmosphere,” said senior Jack Rasmussen, member of the hype squad.
There has been some debate that the hype squad focuses unfairly on some sports, such as volleyball and basketball, while leaving other sports out completely. Some people also say that the hype squad needs to update their Twitter more regularly and make the theme for each game more clear.
“As an athlete, it helps us because the crowd really pumps me up, but this year it’s not doing a good job. The tweets are late, half the time I don’t know there’s a game and I don’t know the themes,” said junior Biruk Teshome.
