On January 27, 2017, thousands of anti-abortion protestors, also known as pro-lifers, gathered in D.C. to march for the fight against abortion. They marched down Constitution Avenue to the Supreme Court. Before the march, a rally was held near the Washington Monument. There were many guest speakers, including Vice President Mike Pence and presidential adviser Kellyanne Conway, who spoke about the “right to life.” House Representative Mia Love also spoke at the rally.
“We no longer settle for ‘what might have been’ and instead embrace the possibilities of the life that is and is to come,” Love said.
This annual march has been going on for the past 44 years ever since the major court decision Roe v. Wade in 1973 that legalized abortions in every state. Many people who march believe that this decision was unconstitutional due to the belief that the termination of a fetus is taking a life.
“I went to the march because the pro-life cause is something that I strongly believe in. It saddens me that so many people have convinced themselves that babies in the womb aren’t actual people and that they don’t see abortion as the termination of a life,” senior Lindsey Stegenga says.
“Everybody has the right to life, and once a baby is conceived, becoming a person with their own unique DNA, somebody else shouldn’t get to decide that the baby doesn’t get to live.”
