For sophomore Chris Kim, being an athlete means putting extra hours in order to improve his game. His dedication is recognized by his coach and teammates alike as the reason for his past successes and he will be able to exceed expectations in the upcoming season.

As a freshman last year, Kim was the only Mason boys’ tennis player to make it to the VHSL State Semifinals. Kim had a 10-3 singles record, a 12-1 doubles record. He played the number one seed for both singles and doubles last year and hopes to keep the same position for this upcoming season.

“His commitment to the game [makes him a vital aspect of the team],” principal and head coach Matt Hills said. “He is hardworking and recognizes what needs to be done.”

This is Kim’s ninth year playing tennis, and second year playing with the George Mason varsity team.   

“It might be harder this year, but I want to get further [in the State Tournament] than I did last year,” Kim said.

Kim works hard year-round on his game by practicing in the offseason with his other teammates and outside coach.

“[Kim] is a really great player, [and] respects all of his other teammates and challenges us to become better,” senior Reed Kellett said.

He has three more seasons ahead of him, but Kim is already off to an impressive start. With his impressive finish last season, The Lasso is trusting that the boys tennis Player to Watch will finish in the State Tournament again this year, and carry his team through a long postseason.
