Essays are timely and somewhat difficult but there are ways to make them easier to write and less  So here are some tips to consider while writing an essay with some help of two writing lab tutors; seniors Anna Connole and Brooke Meinhart.

1. When writing an essay, you must read the prompt and understand what it is asking of you. A common mistake people make is not carefully reading the prompt to see what it is clearly asking of you then everything will be messed up from the beginning. Many people jump into the outline before understanding what the prompt is asking.
2. Once you have read the prompt, start out with an outline to organize your thoughts. If you just start writing without having an outline then the essay will be messy. This also helps with writing an intro because it will give you an organized general idea of what you’re writing about and makes sure that everything is planned ahead.
3. Staying to the assigned register can be difficult, it’s what many people struggle with when writing an essay. If your prompt is opinionated then make sure your opinion is heard but if it’s supposed to be an unbiased paper then make sure your opinion is not in there.
4. Don’t do the essay last minute and make sure to put in the time. It’s important to spend some time on it to put in thought and avoid more mistakes.

“Or come in to the writing lab after school until 4 p.m.,” said Meinhart. The Writing Lab, located in Ms. Tooze’s room A114, is open everyday from 3:00 to 4:00 p.m. (except for short Wednesdays). At the Writing Lab you have some devoted time to writing those essays and also receive aid from Ms. Tooze or the student tutors.
