1. ZooLights– Smithsonian’s National Zoo holds an annual display of more than 500,000 beautiful LED lights that light up the whole zoo. The free event includes light shows, winter treats, souvenirs, and a mobile art gallery running November 24 to January 1.
2. The National Christmas Tree– Located in front of The White House, stands a 48 foot Christmas tree surrounded by the “Pathway of Peace,” a display of 50 smaller trees decorated in themes unique to each of the 50 states, as well as an intricate model of a mini Christmas town. Free to admire, this display has been a tradition since President Calvin Coolidge initiated it over 90 years ago.
3. Gaylord National Harbor ICE!– The Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer themed ice show runs November 18-January 1 and offers a completely interactive indoor walk through ice sculpture exhibit, hand sculpted by 40 international sculptors.Tickets are $20-$30.
4. National Gallery of Art Ice Rink– Surrounded by the National Sculpture Garden, the ice rink creates the perfect holiday experience with tickets for only $8-9.
5. A Christmas Carol at Ford’s Theater– The classic story of Scrooge and the ghosts of Christmas is presented in the historical theater where President Abraham Lincoln was shot. Shows run through November 16-December 31 and ticket prices range from $32-$92.
6. The Nutcracker at Warner Theater– Immerse yourself in the beautiful ballet of the Nutcracker at the famous Warner Theater running until December 24.
7. The Festival of Lights– The Church of Jesus Christ is holding the 40th annual light display that runs November 31-December 31. The temple glows with over 650,000 lights and consists of nightly performances, decorated Christmas trees, and a life-sized nativity scene.
8. The Downtown Holiday Market– The annual holiday market in the heart of DC returns, running November 24-December 23, made up of 150 exhibitors selling diverse gift selections, as well as live music and refreshments. The event is free to explore and enjoy.
