- Coco
Pixar is back at it again! Pixar’s Coco was their nineteenth feature film about a young boy and his journey with music. Miguel wants to become a professional musician, but he encounters a barrier, his ancestor’s ban on music. In order to overcome this barrier, he winds up in the land of the dead where he meets a trickster named Héctor. Together, the pair takes a magnificent journey in order for Miguel to find the reason behind his family’s ban on music.
Pixar has been known for their amazing childrens movies such as Finding Nemo, Toy Story, and The Incredibles. We have all seen them- they are classics. Coco probably won’t become a one of our childhood classics, but it will hold its place with the children of 2017. Coco won the Golden Globe Award for Best Feature Film and New York Film Critics Circle Award for Best Animated Film. I believe that Coco deserved these awards because the animation was wonderful and the story behind the pictures was touching. Pixar, once again, has created another fantastic animated film that will treat many for years to come.
- Dunkirk
In May of 1942, Germany was advancing into France, which trapped a group of allied troops on the beaches of Dunkirk. With the help of the British and French, the group of allies were able to gradually and carefully make their way off of the beaches using every single vessel available. The end of the whole charade evacuated over 300,000 soldiers evacuated off of the beaches of Dunkirk.
2017 has been the year for action and war movies. Dunkirk is just one film in a group of thousands, but it is a special one. Dunkirk was an action packed movie full of suspenseful moments and rough conditions for the crew. The reason that this film is so different from the rest is because of the excellent film work and directing. The way that the cameramen could capture those scenes and really bring the film to life is what captured the hearts of many of its viewers. With the excellence of the film, it is not a surprise to me that it has won so many awards.
- Star Wars: The Last Jedi
Luke Skywalker’s tranquility and solidarity get shaken up once he meets Rey, a woman who shows signs of the force. Because she wants to become a Jedi and learn the ways of the Jedi, Skywalker makes a decision that would change the rest of their lives. While the pair is learning about each other and the ways of the Jedi, Kylo Ren and General Hux lead the first order in an attack against Leia and the resistance in trying to gain complete power of the galaxy.
Everyone knows about Darth Vader and Luke Skywalker for a good reason. The Star Wars series has been a favorite to many because of the action packed scenes, interesting plot, and futuristic special effects for the time. Every single Star Wars movie has been a huge hit and Star Wars: The Last Jedi is no exception. With the huge fan base, the movie has grossed a huge sum of money. The movie is packed with action, drama, and excitement. This movie has substance for every single type of movie goer.
- Cars 3
With a new generation of top of the line sports cars, Lightning McQueen is being pushed away from racing. In order to get back into racing, he finds himself a young technician named Cruz Ramirez. With a little inspiration from Doc Hudson and hard work, McQueen finds himself in the Piston Cup.
Cars has been a childhood film for the majority of us here at Mason- we all know who Lightning McQueen and Tow Mater are. Pixar keeps on bringing back cars films and they have all been hits. I thought that the plot of the film was new and there were some unexpected moments that really fit into the story. Overall this movie is another smash hit for Pixar that brings fun for the entire family.
- Split
While Kevin’s physiatrist had found out that Kevin has 23 different personalities, one personality still remains hidden in the his mind. This one personality is the most powerful and dominant one of them all. This single personality urged him to kidnap three teenagers, which he kept in his home. With all of his personalities battling for complete control over him, the three teenagers are pushed to their limits in order to survive.
This film was packed to the brim with suspenseful moments and exciting scenes. The idea of having a character have 23 personalities was sure to make a fantastic movie, and my inferences weren’t false. This movies was one of my favorite of the year and I would definitely go see another film like this one.
- Baby Boss
Told from the perspective of a seven year old named Tim, a new baby’s arrival shakes up Tim’s family. The new baby comes to Tim’s home wearing a suit with a briefcase in a taxi. The conflicts between the two new siblings must be put behind them because Tim found out that the baby is actually a secret agent that was sent on a special mission. Only Tim can help foil the disastrous plot that was put before the Boss Baby.
I watched this movie at 1 a.m. one morning, and I think that might have affected why I thought that this movie was so good. In the beginning I had no clue if I was gonna finish, but by the end this movie had brought out all of my emotions. This movie was by far one of my favorite cartoon films and I would definitely recommend it to anyone who loves cartoon films.
- Fate of the Furious
Now that Dom and Letty are married, Brian and Maria have retired all of the crew. For the first time in ages, the entire team has gotten a taste of normal life. The team faces an unanticipated surprise when a strange new criminal mastermind named Cipher tricks Dom into betraying the team. Now, the team must collaborate with each other for the last time in order to stop Cipher and save their friend.
This film franchise has been going for a long time. Eventually, you think that they would run out of time, well not the Fast and Furious franchise. This movie had just as many stunts and excitement as the first movie in this franchise. The plot doesn’t disappoint either and it flows quite well.
- Guardians of the Galaxy 2
Peter Quill and his team of Guardians are hired by one of the most powerful races in the Galaxy, the Sovereign. The Guardians job was to protect the Sovereign’s batteries, but when one of the Guardians stole a few of the batteries, the whole Sovereign space brigade was sent after them. During the Guardians daring escape, Quill’s family lineage is revealed to him and the Guardians.
The prequel to the original Guardians of the Galaxy, Guardians of the Galaxy 2 made the original film so much clearer. The plot was also very interesting because most superhero films don’t have to do with family lineage, but Marvel took a risk and it was turned out to be a good decision. Guardians of the Galaxy 2 grossed a lot of money on opening day and I hope that Marvel decides to make a third film in order to make a trilogy.
- Beauty and the Beast
A nice, beautiful, free spirited young girl named Bella is captured by the beast and sent to live in the castle. Though frightened, Bella finds a way to make friends with the castles staff members and learns to look past the monster that is the beast and see the kind-hearted prince that is hidden inside.
I thought that this film wasn’t going to be that good because I didn’t really like the original Disney film. I was forced to go with my parents and I had a bad attitude going into the theatre. When leaving the theatre, however, my attitude completely changed. The movie was much better than the original Disney film for multiple reasons: the graphics, the dialogue, and the directing. If there is another adaptation of any original Disney movie, I would be glad to go see any other adaption of an original Disney movie if I knew it is as good as the Beauty and the Beast was.
- Get Out
Once Chris and his girlfriend, Rose, have reached the “meet-the-parents” milestone of their relationship, Rose invites Chris to a weekend trip with her parents. At the start, Chris finds the parents behavior as an odd way to cope with the fact that her daughter is in an interracial relationship, but as the weekend goes on, some terrifying discoveries show Chris the unfathomable truth that he never thought of.
Get Out is without a doubt the best horror-thriller film of 2017 and arguably the best film of 2017. The dark discoveries that Chris makes are completely unexpected; with all of the suspenseful moments and unexpected plot twists, the recipe for a excellent movie was coming together. By the end of the film, I had no clue what to feel. My emotions had been toyed with and this was the first movie that had ever done that. This movie is one of my favorites and I would recommend it to anyone.
