The fire drill picnic, a George Mason tradition where the last fire drill of the year becomes an occasion for students and faculty to enjoy the end of the year through a picnic, is on. This year??s event is occurring on Monday, June 8 at 10:45 a.m.. Usually an hour or two long, it is considered a great activity for both teachers and students to relax at the end of the year, and is something looked forward to by many students.
??It??s a really fun tradition and I??m glad they??re bringing it back,?? said senior Beth Cashin.
Last year, this tradition did not occur due to budget cuts, the middle school field being occupied, poor planning, or some combination of all. This year, however, it is back on as the 8th annual fire drill picnic. The Student Council Association has stepped up to fund the event this year and has conducted numerous fundraisers throughout second semester to ensure that it will take place.
??It??s a costly tradition, but it??s worth it,?? said sophomore Hannah Hiscott, the rising school treasurer. As next years Treasurer, she has guaranteed the tradition will continue.
After exiting the building, students should head to the field for a school photo, free pizza, celebration of retiring teachers and faculty, and fun in the sun.
