I like most candy. Licorice, chocolates, gumdrops and lollipops– so long as it’s not sour, I will probably eat it. However, I will not eat candy corn.

Candy corn was purportedly invented in the late 1800s. It consists of small, brightly-colored, kernel-like bites. Since its debut, this confectionary classic has become one of the most controversial Halloween treats because of the fire it incites in consumers. You either love it, or you hate it.

I hate it.

Dessert is what I live for. Yet even my seemingly endless appetite for junk food has a limit, and candy corn is it. This sweet is essentially a bag of sugar triangles.

Peeps have faced similar criticism for being sugar-coated marshmallows. Still, I believe the execution of Peeps is superior to that of candy corn, as the texture is far more pleasant. The fluffiness present in Peeps adds a much appreciated sense of softness to the experience.

Eating a Peep is like eating a cloud. Eating a candy corn kernel is like eating a candle.

Candy corn is typically held together with edible wax. This results in a stiffer candy with almost a chalky feel. Some enjoy this, but I do not. Frankly, I think it’s gross.

This past Halloween, I pawned off any candy corn I got.
