Prom improvised: Mason students on dance’s cancellation

According to junior Ashley Zigler, “Prom is one of those checkpoints of high school we looked forward to all year.” However, with the closure of schools and school functions due to COVID-19, high schoolers across the nation were forced to improvise. For some Mason students, this involved taking pictures at the Lincoln Memorial in their prom dresses, or hosting their own backyard-proms instead. Though, “nothing can replace the experience,” Zigler said.

On Saturday May 23, the SCA will host a virtual prom, which will involve an online raffle, a Prom Court announcement, a playlist compiled of song recommendations from juniors and seniors, and a thematic “Roaring 20s” Zoom background.

“It’s disappointing prom 2020 was canceled this year, but we’ve been working hard to do what we can so virtual prom is as enjoyable as possible,” Junior Class Vice President James Trombo said.
