The VHSL condensed sports schedule, explained

Many aspects of our lives have been adjusted due to COVID-19, from school to eating out at restaurants. The VHSL sport schedule has also been adjusted to accommodate for the pandemic.  Sports are delayed tentatively until late 2020— currently, the plan is to still have all sports play with condensed schedules. If the plan holds, this is what sports will look like:

Winter: 

With the Virginia High School League (VHSL) pushing back the start of sports. Winter sports will start first this year. Most winter sports practices will start on December 14 with contests starting in the weeks after. Contests will be reduced this year with little to no out of conference games. A breakdown of each sport: Basketball will have 14 contests, swim & dive will have six contests, and wrestling will have eight contests. The seasons will finish with state events in late February.

Girls Cross Country Team
Cross country has started to have preseason practices already. The girls team practices on Mondays and the boys team practices on Wednesday to promote social distancing.

Fall: 

Fall sports will now start in February of 2021 with contests following in the first week of March. Unlike a normal year, the fall sports season will start second. Football and Competition Cheer practices will start first on February 4 with other fall sports starting February 15. A breakdown of each sport: Competition cheer will have three contests, cross country will have six contests, field hockey will have ten contests, football will have six contests, golf will have eight contests, and volleyball will have twelve contests. Seasons will finish with the state finals in late April.

Spring: 

After the spring season was canceled last year, all spring sports are scheduled to happen with their seasons starting in mid-April. All spring sports first practice will be on April 12, with contests starting two weeks later. A breakdown of each sport: Baseball will have twelve contests, lacrosse will have nine contests, soccer will have ten contests, softball will have twelve contests, tennis will have ten contests, and track & field will have nine contests. The spring sports season will end with the state finals being at the end of June.

Academic Activities:

All Academic Activities will start in 2021, Scholastic Bowl will start first, with its first deadline on January 30. Theater will have its first deadline on February 6.  The last activity to start will be Speech & Debate on March 27. State finals for the different activities will vary.
