The weekend is here. What should you do?

Kylie Moffatt, Staff Reporter

We all get bored. Bored to the point where we would rather do our homework than stare at the wall. Nobody wants that. Here’s a handful of activities that you can do by yourself or with friends to keep you entertained (or from doing your work).

Try a few of these activities so that your weekend doesn’t spiral into spending hours on your phone. (Eva Williams)

Try knitting

With the holidays coming up and supply chains for shops running slow, knitting something for the whole family is a sure way to fill your time. They may not find your knitting the most pleasant but it gives you an excuse to not buy them presents. Knitting is hard at first but once you get the hang of it, you can’t stop (speaking from experience). Some say it’s for old people but one day we will all be old people so you might as well start early.

Go hiking.

Whether alone, with friends, or with your pets, hiking is always an enjoyable activity. You find a trail somewhere and start walking, it’s as simple as that. There are lots of flat trails in the area, and more difficult peaks like Old Rag Mountain just a drive away. However, I wouldn’t quite recommend hiking in the temperatures to come: unless you want to catch a cold, it won’t be fun. Hit the trails before the snow arrives!

Exercise or try yoga.

While I myself do not recommend this because I am a couch potato, I’m sure others will. You could go biking, swimming, play a sport, do an exercise routine. Maybe experiment with some old jazzercise videos. You could do yoga to stretch your muscles or simply to take a breather and forget about your worries and your strifes (I mean the bare necessities, old Mother Nature’s recipes…).

Go ice skating.

Ice skating is perfect. ‘Tis the season! There are plenty of ice rinks around Falls Church and they’re open all year round. Even if it’s not the easiest of activities you’ve got a great opportunity to fall on your butt. There is nothing better than to slide on solid water with no sure footing underneath you and fifty people racing to get around you.

I also recommend everyday pastimes such as:

  • Going to a coffee shop(s)
  • Hanging out with friends
  • Watching Netflix
  • Reading
  • Going shopping
  • Taking a walk

The winter weekends can feel oddly long, with the sun setting so early. Be sure to utilize your time so you can relax and create fun memories! I hope you find inspiration in this list of activities and enjoy the many holidays and weekends to come.
