Eternals: Love it or hate it?

Mac Duross and Pariss Quaintance

Overview:

“Eternals,” a part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, follows ten Eternals from when they started their journey 7,000 years ago – at the beginning of mankind – to the present day. The Eternals’ purpose is to protect the world from the Deviants, who were created by the Celestials. When Celestials made the Deviants, they failed to program them in a way where they couldn’t evolve. After the Deviants went on a rampage of taking out life on planets, the Celestials created the Eternals. The Eternals were told not to interfere with Earth unless Deviants were involved. (Fun fact: the Mad Titan, Thanos, is an Eternal who was born with the Deviant gene, which is the reason he looks purple with reptile-like features.) In the movie, you will experience plenty of twists and turns involving the Celestials, Eternals, and Deviants that will definitely play with your emotions.

Meet the ten Eternals:

  1. Ajak (Salma Hayek) is the leader of the group of the Eternals. Her powers are conscious control over their molecular structures and superhuman strength. She can heal herself and others.
  2. Ikaris (Richard Madden) is the most powerful of the bunch, with powers that give him the ability to fly and shoot cosmic energy out of his eyes similar to Cyclops.
  3. Sersi (Gemma Chan) is incredibly powerful. We learn that she has the ability to touch anything and manipulate the matter to change it to whatever she wishes. For example, a bus was speeding down the street about to hit Ikaris, and she stepped in front and made the entire bus rose pedals. She and Ikaris also have a tricky past love relationship.
  4. Thena (Angelina Jolie) is an extremely skilled fighter in close combat that can forge weapons out of cosmic energy. Thena has superhuman strength and agility. Thena is probably the most skilled in hand-to-hand combat making her one the most powerful Eternals besides Ikaris and Ajak. Thena is known as the Goddess of War.
  5. Gilgamesh (Ma Dong-Seok) is the kindest and most generous Eternal on the team. His power is a cosmic exoskeleton manifestation that enhances his fist to have cosmic energy. This makes Gilgamesh extremely dangerous in hand-to-hand combat.
  6. Kingo (Kymali Nunjiani) is a cosmic-powered member of the group that can shoot cosmic energy out of his fingers, like finger guns. He can load up explosive cosmic energy blasts as well. He is one of the comedians of the group and lightens the mood of the film in a fun way.
  7. Druig (Barry Keoghan) is the only Eternal that possesses the ability of mind control. He is the rebel of the group and does not accept the rules given to him by the Celestial Arishem and the Eternals leader, Ajak about not interfering with humanity. He is a conflicted character but truly a good person and has become really attached to mankind.
  8. Sprite (Lia McHugh) is the trickster of the group. She can create illusions and is responsible for creating many myths and legends over time, as she has lived since the beginning of time.
  9. Makkari (Lauren Ridloff) has the power of super speed and is deaf. She uses sign language to communicate.
  10. Phaistos (Brian Tyree Henry) has the power of forging extremely advanced technology from cosmic energy. He is the smartest of the bunch.

Our reactions:

Mac: I was upset with the final ending. I thought things could have gone differently. But overall, they did a pretty good job introducing 10 characters in one movie. It’s really hard to introduce that many people and tell a story, so I understand why the movie was a little underwhelming for many.

Pariss: I thoroughly enjoyed this movie, however it didn’t live up to Marvel expectations in my opinion. The story gave fellow Marvel fans more information about the Marvel Cinematic Universe and the upcoming new movies. Chloe Zhao did an amazing job with giving us relatable characters through their backgrounds and storylines. For Marvel fans who really enjoy the Avengers family-style movies, I would say you wouldn’t be fully satisfied with Eternals. However, if you’re just a lover of the Marvel universe, I recommend the film.
